The Pomio district education team has rolled out its education subsidy dispatch for 14 institutions around the country with a component total of K1.2 million.
Hillary Songtava Pomio, district deputy administrator and subsidy coordinator, said that due to the increasing number of Pomio students in institutions across the country, they were able to pay 14 institutions with full payments of subsidy.
“We consider only the recognised institutions, such as colleges, nursing colleges and universities,” he said.
Mr Songtava said that in those 14 institutions, a total of 410 Pomio district students were under the K1.2 million education subsidy component to help assist the students’ parental component, which the parents have already paid.
“We want to acknowledge the Member for Pomio and Health Minister Elias Kapavore for making this possible to benefit all the Pomio students with the total budget of K1.2 million, that’s why we paid according to a break up for each LLG in Pomio,” said Mr Songtava.
Presenting the deposit slip and student list to the Papua New Guinea University of Natural Resources and Environment (PNG UNRE), Gaulim Teachers College and Somare Institute of Leadership and Governance (SILAG) in East New Britain Province, Pomio District Registrar Clare Sonai said that the most important criteria of the subsidy is student transcript.
“When students go home with their last semester transcripts, so we, the committee, know how well they are performing, so we approve the payments according to their GPA transcripts,” she said.
Pomio district education officer Andrew Tabulo added that meeting the criteria of the subsidy is a privilege.
“It’s not a right but is a privilege that when you meet the criteria, you are eligible,” he said.
